Local Land Use Tools for Large-Scale Renewable Energy in Mississippi Counties
The Mississippi Association of Supervisors is pleased to share an upcoming webinar hosted by Mississippi State University Extension Service focused on the land-use tools available to Mississippi counties for large-scale renewable-energy development, including solar-energy facilities and related infrastructure.
The session will explain how county authority differs for counties with comprehensive plans and zoning ordinances versus counties relying on home-rule and other statutory powers. It will also address when a regulation may constitute zoning and the procedural and legal requirements that can follow.
County officials will also hear about practical approaches for managing development impacts such as access, traffic, drainage, setbacks, buffering, operational impacts, decommissioning, site restoration, and financial assurance. The goal is to help counties understand legally defensible options that protect public health, safety, and welfare while responding appropriately to proposed energy development.
