Severe weather struck several areas of Mississippi on Jan. 21, resulting in severe damages in multiple counties.  That same day, Gov. Bryant issued a State of Emergency and authorized the use of the National Guard.  On Jan. 25, President Trump declared Forrest, Lamar, Lauderdale and Perry Counties federal disaster areas.  The declaration includes individual assistance and the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.

At the Mid-Winter Legislative Conference, the MAS Membership adopted a resolution in support of additional funding for transportation infrastructure.  Click here for the official resolution.

The consulting firm (EdBuild) hired to study and evaluate how the State of Mississippi funds public education released their recommendations on Monday January 16th.  Of the various recommendations, one in particular stood out as it relates to ad valorem taxes.  EdBuild’s executive director (Rebecca Sibilia) stated that lawmakers should consider giving school boards the freedom of raising local funds above the state cap of 55 mills.  The MAS lobbying team is very concerned about this part of the recommendation, and the possible negative impact this could have on local ad valorem taxes.

Local presentations from the recent County Road Show hosted by MAS and the Mississippi Association of County Engineers are now online.  Find your region's presentation here.

If you would like to request a copy of the PowerPoint on a flash drive, please contact Stephanie Spangler at sspangler@massup.org or call MAS at 601.353.2741.
